The fast food industry doesn’t just produce on-demand fries and burgers quickly, it’s also classically had a rapid turnover of employees. That’s a headache during normal times, but with the current post-COVID staffing shortage, it’s proving to be more of a migraine.
One McDonald’s restaurant in Altamont, Illinois, has a bright idea to get staff to hang around, though: Offer free iPhones for those who stay in the job for at least six months.
A photo shared on Twitter by user @brogawd_ shows off a sign posted in the window of the McDonald’s reading, “Now hiring. Free iPhone.”
According to a spokesperson from McDonald’s, it’s an effort to up recruitment numbers. Other stores in the United States are offering referral bonuses, pay incentives, and assorted other benefits. One McDonald’s is even offering $50 for people willing to come in for an interview.

It’s not clear from the ad what iPhone workers can expect to get for their loyalty. Nonetheless, it’s a decent perk and a nice reward for people willing to commit to regular work for a prolonged period.
Ironically (at least in that Alanis Morissette kinda way) the company which builds the iPhone is also having to work overtime to find people to staff its production lines. According to a recent report, contract manufacturer Foxconn has raised its bonus payments to lure in new recruits. Each new recruit will earn a bonus of $1,158 (7,500 yuan) if they work for 90 days, and are on duty for at least 55 days during that time. This is twice the 3,500 bonus that was on offer at the end of March. It’s also the third bonus increase in the past month.
